£25k Audi A5 Sportback
July 16th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
AUDI has entered yet another new car sector – the premium hatchback line-up – with the new A5 Sportback.
Drawing from the A5 Coupe, the new model is in essence an A4 five-door – but just as dramatic as the looks is the price.
For, Audi has pitched its new car to start at £25k… even less than was initially predicted.
This will buy a standard 2.0-litre TDI version; SE variants start at £27k, with S line trim also on offer. Audi will initially offer a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, a 3.2-litre V6 petrol, and a 3.0-litre TDI as well. Further engines will come on stream in time.
The order books are open at Audi dealers now for the new five-door, with deliveries starting in October.
So what will buyers be getting? Well, like the forthcoming BMW 5 Series GT, it’s a blend of tall, almost crossover-look proportions, with contoured lines and a sloping rear.
Audi has fitted a longer wheelbase than the standard A5, which means the book packs in 480 litres even with the seats up. Fold this, and it stretches to 980 litres.
However, controversially, the Audi only seats four. The rear cabin has been specially designed to offer lots of laid-back comfort and space, for no more than two pairs. This, apparently, is befitting of the model’s upmarket approach.
Will it be a hit? Well, we haven’t long to wait. Audi is letting us drive it next week, with first reports from the launch following in due course.
Come back soon, to find out what the brand has planned for its interesting new ‘A4 Avant’ alternative…
