2011 £5k green grant
February 25th, 2010 by Richard Aucock
GOVERNMENT officials have revealed details of a green car grant to incentivise low-carbon cars.
From January 2011, car buyers can get up to £5k towards buying a green new motor.
It is called Plug-in Car Grant and will be offered by car dealers against the price of eligible electric cars such as the Nissan LEAF.
Significantly, it ALSO includes plug-in hybrids, too!
Those new electric cars are going to be supported by a further Government scheme, to create electric car recharging hubs. £30m will be invested in the ‘Plugged-In Places’ scheme.
The first three successful bidding regions were revealed today:
• London
• Milton Keynes
• North East
11,000 recharging points will be installed in these regions during the next 3 years. It’s all part of a £450m strategy to establish an early market for electric cars.
More bids from the West Midlands, Cornwall, Sheffield, the Lake District, Greater Manchester, and Northern Ireland are being submitted. These will be judged in June – meaning car dealers there may get a green car boost, too.
Transport secretary Andrew Adonis said ‘by this time next year, cutting edge motorists will be on the roads with these next generation cars they’ve purchased because of our help.
‘And thanks to the Plugged-In Places we will have in place infrastructure to support this growing early market.
Plug-in Car Grant details
• Provide up to 25 percent towards cost of new car
• Capped at £5k
• Offered to private and retail buyers
• Eligible cars must pass performance criteria
As scrappage fades, then, so ‘plug-in grant’ will become the new Government incentive buzzword.
What are your reactions to the scheme? Do you think it will help get green early adopters to sign on the dotted line?
