£5k aid not the priority!
April 20th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
INDUSTRY expert Roy Kishor says the Government should get its priorities right for car maker aid.
While any incentives are to be welcomed, he says there is a more pressing need for assistance NOW – rather than £5k electric car initiatives several years down the line.
‘Government needs to focus on taking consistent incremental steps to revive the motor industry,’ said Kishor.
He echoes Car Dealer Magazine’s call for a scrap scheme – now. ‘The first step should be the immediate introduction of a scrappage scheme.’
And, after that? Kishor says attention should turn to providing more accessible and affordable car credit.
‘Only once these measures are in place should we begin to think about incentives for electric cars.’
It is simply too early, he says, to be considering electric car initiatives. ‘There are very few electric vehicles on the market, nor is there the infrastructure to recharge them.
‘Until the government agrees a strategy with the energy providers that will enable a charging infrastructure to be available – and over what period of time – this incentive scheme is more sound than substance.’
