56mpg Honda hybrid CR-Z

honda_cr-zHONDA has revealed the production version of the sporty CR-Z hybrid coupe set for car dealers this summer.

It is both the world’s first affordable hybrid coupe – and the first petrol-electric hybrid with a manual gearbox.

Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre VTEC engine mated to Honda’s IMA electric-assist hybrid tech. This new engine produces 124PS, and has the same torque figure as a 1.8-litre Civic. Honda says this ensures punchy performance.

A wide track and short wheelbase will aid handling, too. There will even be a 3-mode ‘Drive System’ to tweak steering feel, accelerator response and the degree to which the hybrid system prioritises economy or performance.

CO2 emissions will be a low 117g/km.

Inside, for European cars only, there will also be a 2+2 seating layout. US cars, such as the model debuting this week over in Detroit, will be 2-seaters only.

’The CR-Z is a great-looking, sporty car – that’s also a hybrid,’ said Tom Gardner, head of marketing at Honda UK.

‘Kart-like handling and direct steering will make it great fun to drive, but the hybrid system means exhaust emissions are kept low. With the torque boost of the electric motor, it’s ideally suited to ‘point-to-point’ driving in British towns and cities.’

Honda even promises a sporty exhaust note for the Insight-derived motor.

Gardner says we’ll see more at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Car Dealer Magazine will be there to check out the intriguing new Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe!

In the meantime, feel free to share your views with us… is it a hit or a miss for Honda?
