5.2m ‘can’t afford’ faults

A THIRD of all cars on the road in the UK will break down every year – but most owners have no spare cash for repairs.
Warranty Direct reveals 53 percent of motorists reckon they would be unable to find any free cash to repair their car if it broke down.
That’s because the company also told them the average repair bill was £273.
And it’s motorists in Northern Ireland who are least able to afford this.
84 percent there said they would be unable to meet that average repair cost.
Certainly, it’s a revealing survey – it is an indicator of how the recession is affecting car owners. Indeed, it goes on to say that a third of owners are stretching servicing intervals to save cash.
And, of course, increase the risk of breakdowns.
It also, of course, arms dealers with facts for why people should take out an extended warranty. Conveniently, nearly 3 in 4 owners admitted they’d be lost without their car…
